What keeps me going as an FP is the happiness of fulfilling people’s dreams. I also get to learn from people around me. Every day is a new day of possibilities!
I am drawn to family kinship. Serving families bring me joy. I like listening to the older generation sharing their life experiences and learning from them. I feel I connect with people who love their families, that they take the effort and time to make sure people they love are covered. That’s being accountable and I respect that alot.
I was a HR Assistant in an MNC. It was 1996 and the market was not doing well. A senior management opening we had received 100+ hard copy applications, every day. My HR director told me then: Discard those who are in their 40s.
At 40, one should be in his prime; with good accumulated experiences…a highly positive asset to a company. Yet my boss was only wanted below 40yr old for a very senior position. I realized it will happen to me at some point. There is no job security. It was a wakeup call to me.
I started researching what can I do with the strengths I have, for more control of my career. With tax consulting skills, a love of teaching and somewhat drawn to banking and finance...I end up calling insurance companies to find a manager whom I can learn from. I met my eventual mentor, Alison who made me feel so comfortable with her extremely professional approach. I passed the exam…But I was comfortable with my HR job. Everyone doted on me. I know all the 500 staff by name. I was ready to say no to Alison. Then something happened.
It was 19th December 1997 – the day when SilkAir Flight 185 crashed. I watched the news, feeling sad for the victims. Never did I imagine my schoolmate was on the plane, too. We met up for BBQ just two weeks before. He was in good spirits, telling us he was going to be engaged, applying for a flat and SPR for his parents and brother. He was happy. He was successful. He was 21.
He was gone.
At 21, he actually bought a $100K coverage. During the wake, his parents shared so much about him…it made me appreciate the protection from insurance.
I joined Alison after that and never looked back.

I would describe myself as fun-loving, able to listen, kind and caring. I love the arts. I respect artists of all trades and forms. I always donate to buskers; I admire the way they never hide their talents under the table but perform with such passion.
I love colouring, it calms and soothes me.
I also do palm size clay sculpturing for my church.
I like listening to JJ Lin, Mayday, Jacky Cheung…anyone with a great voice! Josh Grohan, Andrea Bocelli...a bit of shouting and screaming is fine, too! Lol...
As a kid, I looked up to Lee Kuan Yew and my grandmother. The former is strict and wise, the latter is quiet and wise. LKY – I love to listen to his speeches. He was fearless. Maybe because he was passionate about his mission. His faithfulness was most admired too. Most importantly, he knows how to use talents. My grandmother – She always sat a corner quietly chanting. Slow to anger and gentle, a woman of few words but prefer actions.
The hardest thing for me is giving bad news to clients about their medical results. When I first started, I had to tell an 18yr old that she has diabetes, discovered through the insurance medical check-up. I can still remember her reaction then 22 years ago.
I’m glad I didn’t join those unethical agencies but went straight into Alliance. It’s like a big family to me - many brothers and sisters with different characters and strengths. We work like a big family. Whenever anyone encounter any issues, everyone will come forward and help selflessly. The comradery here is incomparable.

I believe in a win-win outcome. If the client must spend money, it must benefit her or his cause. That is top priority to me.
This year marks my 31st anniversary in this career - this is my first job and it will also be, my last.
