A month before my final year exam in Ngee Ann, my father passed on. After the funeral, my mum repeatedly said she wanted to buy insurance. I asked: Why mum? Why now? Her answer shocked me: If anything were to happen to me, you and Mei can go on.

I felt my world crash hearing her answer. I stopped her, telling her to save the money for herself - I will go and buy insurance when I graduate and work to pay the premiums. I managed to stall her for 18 months. This story always brings tears each time I share it - it feels like stopping your mum from trying to do extreme things.

One of my proud moments was as a young agent, I garnered my first award - The 50 Life Club. It was such a welcoming award. It meant that I was closing almost 1 case per week, except the 2 weeks of CNY. I still have the newspaper advertisement with me.

I enjoy serving the family clients, to get to know the whole family and be there for every member. It warms my heart to be able to serve the siblings, see them set up families eventually and even protect their children. Now the eldest of my 2nd generation client is already 20 years old. They call me Auntie Kim. It’s a joy to see them once a year when we gather during CNY.

What I am passionate about

I paint, write and cook. Recently, I took up quilt and coaster sewing.

My paintings are a reflective of my inner self. Many times, people tell me: Kim, there is something in your painting. It’s very calm and yet you can sense deeper emotions that cannot be described.

I like to paint the blue sky. It’s a different story, every time. I suppose as a young child with both working parents, looking at the sky and making up stories helped me to pass time. When I paint, I see the clouds bringing peace and calm going forward.

I am the 1st batch of NAFA’s Part Time Script Writing and Director class graduate in the late 1990s. I have co-written a play and directed it to a full house with my Ngee Ann theatre friends in 1999.

I have been doing volunteer work since age 22, from my old school alumni to grassroot work, to visiting old folks living in rental flats and now a trail guide. These activities broadened my view of life and brought a lot more life experiences that helped me survive many other challenges.

The hardest thing in life would be giving the permission for the doctor to turn off the life support machine for my late mum that Sat afternoon in August 2010. Telling her that we have all grown up and that she is free to roam as a free spirit and go search for my late brother, whom she had miss for 30 odd years.

I have 2 good buddies in the team, Hoon Lay and Hui Noi. When they started, I was already years in the business. I see them as the younger me. As the years go by, we grew together. I saw Hui Noi get married and set up family, while Hoon Lay’s children grew up. We shared many moments in the business together. They have been my support when my mum passed on, especially in helping me to set up the funeral alter and taking care of things. I’m forever grateful to these 2 ladies to have standby me during those difficult times.
